News: Contact me by email: fortunatusfamilia(at)gmail(dot)com and I will try and answer short queries. However if an individual is not on the site or I don't have details in the notes section then I can't help. However I am always happy to compare research notes.

      • Clerk of the Irish Parliament.

There's a similar descent given in Misc. Gen. et Her., s.5 vol.VII, pp.41 et seq., although it differs in minor details (e.g. 13 seems to be given as Ann, rather than Elizabeth), and gives a few more dates. 49 is stated to be daughter of "Sir ... Phillips" of Picton, Bt, and widow of one 'Meddop'; I did find a Philipps pedigree which gives Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Philipps, 1st Bt (d.1629) by his wife Anne Perrott, as marrying Edward Medhope, clerk of the Irish Parliament, which would seem to fit; 97 is given as daughter of Nicholas St John of Lydiard Tregoze.

At that time there appears at Chapelizod one of the most distinguished soldiers in the Irish wars at the close of Queen Elizabeth's reign, Sir Henry Power, who was afterwards created Viscount Valentia. Power, who became not only the owner of, but a resident, at Chapelizod, acquired first the property there belonging to the Whites, and afterwards was granted, as the assignee of one Edward Medhop, the entire manor, excepting such portion as belonged to Sir John Davies and to the parish church.
