(1) 1635/6, 4 Mar: John Temple of Bishopstowe, Co. Wilts., Gentleman, wrote his will, proved 23 Jan 1637/8. Gives to wife Mary until son William Temple shall be 22, his lands at Hachbury, Parish of Warminster, and his mills, he to pay her 1,000 lbs. when he reaches 22 to enable her to pay the legacies.
In 1635 he soldBishopstrow to William Temple, in whose family itremained for 300 years. (fn. 21) Temple's son Peter redeemed the £50 rent, which had passed throughvarious hands, in 1690. (fn. 22) Peter's son Samuel hadtwo sons, of whom the elder, Peter, died unmarriedin 1755. The younger, William, left, by his thirdwife, a son William who was born shortly beforehis father's death in 1781, and died in 1875
In 1533 the manor house and farm of Bishopstrow were let for 99 years to Robert Abath, who hadmarried a sister of Joan Temmes, the last Abbess ofLacock. In 1592 Clement Abath assigned the leaseto Geoffrey Hawkins of Bishopstrow, clothier, andin 1613 Hawkins's widow and her second husbandassigned it to John Temple of Kingston Deverill,whose son bought the freehold of the property.
