Mr. John Wright, by his will, dated 24th May, 1659, gave to the trustees for the poor in these almshouses the lease of the house in High Holborn, wherein he then dwelt; and directed that out of the profits thereof the poor men should have every one a coat, and each of the poor women a gown, at Michaelmas in every second year, during the term to come in the said lease; and that all the residue of the annual profits should be employed towards the further relief of the said poor men and women.
The lease of the house granted by Wright expired at Lady-day, 1780. It appears that at the time of the devise it produced a rent of 30/. a year, a large addition at that time to the income of the charity, and which seems to have materially and permanently influenced the mode of relief given to the almspeople.
The almshouses consist of ten separate dwellings, containing each one apartment, inhabited by four poor men and six poor women, appointed by the trustees from among the resident parishioners in the Upper Liberty of St. Andrew's, Holborn, and in the adjoining parish of St. George the Martyr, which, as we have before observed, formerly constituted part of the parish of St. Andrew, Holborn. Applications by petition are received for admission into these almshouses, which are preserved, and when a vacancy occurs, the candidate among those who have so applied, who is considered to be the fittest object of the charity, is appointed.
