Scope and Content
Copy of articles of agreement between Thomas Assheton of Ashley, esq., of the one part, and Thomas Smith of St Martin's in the Fields' parish, Middlesex, esq. (son, heir and sole executor of the Rt. Hon. John Smith, late of Tedworth, Hants., esq., deceased) and Harriet Theodosia Smith, sister of the said Thomas Smith, of the other, on the marriage between the said Thomas Assheton and Harriet.
Harriet Theodosia Smith (b 1699, d 23.01.1773). m. (23.04.1724) Thomas Assheton of Ashley (bpt 30.09.1678, bur 09.07.1759.
In 1733 the estate was given to John Smith of Tedworth in Hampshire and in 1762 passed to his nephew (nai), Thomas Assherton Smith (1752-1828) from Ashley in Cheshire. The Dinorwig quarry (chwarel) at Llanberis was part of the estate and Asherton Smith made a fortune from the slate (llechi) and from renting his land to farmers (ffermwyr).
