The Siege of Devizes and the Battle of Roundway Down. An exhibition of original sources and relics.
Monday, 04 July, 2005
Sadly not many relics survive of the cavalry Battle of Roundway Down on 14 July 1643, certainly the best known and most important event in the long history of Devizes. After the battle all weapons from the fight that could be re-used would have been taken away by the victorious Royalist army, ‘scavengers’ from Devizes would have removed anything else that had been left on the battlefield while the bodies of the dead would have been stripped before burial.
The current exhibition at Wiltshire Heritage Museum brings together for the first time the surviving relics of the battle and the siege of Devizes which preceded it on the days before. Pride of place goes perhaps to a fragment of a cannon found in Devizes Castle. The large bubbles of air clearly seen which were left in the faulty casting explain how it will have exploded in use and one wonders what hurt it caused to the artillery men firing it. Of equal importance is the contemporary portrait of a Devizes man, Richard Pierce, who at a time when the beleaguered defenders were almost without ammunition, sold them gunpowder, which helped to prolong the siege.
