* ABBOT, Sir Morris (1565-1642). Alderman of Bridge With
out from 1626 to 1631, and of Coleman street from 1631 to 1642, Abbot came of an influential family with ecclesiastical, commercial, and gentry connexions. He was the son of a City Clothworker and the son-in-law of the wealthy Alderman Bartholomew Barnes. His brother George was Archbishop of Canterbury, and another brother, Robert, was Bishop of Salisbury. His trading connexions were ubiquitous: he was free of the Turkey, Italian, French, Spanish, and Muscovy Companies. In at least four Companies, he had held some of the highest positions. An Incorporator of the East India Company, he was Deputy Governor from 1615 to 1624, and Governor from 1624 to 1637; he was an Incorporator and Director of the North-West Passage Company in 1612, Treasurer of the Levant Company from 1614 to 1616 and then, one of the Court of Assistants to 1624. He was an opponent of the Sandys group in the Virginia Company and was therefore proposed for the post of Treasurer by the crown in 1620 and 1622 in opposition to the ruling party. In 1624, he was appointed one of the royal Council set up to discuss the future of Virginia.
