..The origins of the estate later known as HERCIES manor are obscure. The property is first mentioned by name in 1386 when it formed part of the extensive estates of the Charlton family. (fn. 39) The Charltons still held Hercies in 1462, (fn. 40) and subsequently the descent of the manor appears to have followed that of Swakeleys manor in Ickenham. (fn. 41) After the death in 1643 of Sir Edmund Wright, however, Hercies passed to his daughter Elizabeth, wife of Sir John Trott. (fn. 42) The property thereafter passed in the female line to Sir Charles Shuckburgh, whose son John sold Hercies in 1709 to Edward Gibbon. Four years later Gibbon conveyed the manor to Sir Thomas Hardy (d. 1732..."
