- Poll of the freeholders of Wilts. 1772: - Seend, John Axford of Eastcott.
John's father, Henry, was a lawyer, coroner and later Mayor of Devizes. He owned a great deal of property in/near Seend. He was involved in some election fixing - described in detail in an article in the Wiltshire FHS journal. John was apprenticed to John Merewether, grocer of Bristol at £100 in 1740/41.
The will (John, Senior, Gentleman, of Market Lavington) refers to sons William and John, daughters Elizabeth and Grace, and cousins Froud and Ann Axford of Erlestoke, grandchildren John, Henry, Jane (children of Henry).
There is a second will of John Axford of Eastcott, Parish of Urchfont, Gentleman, 1807 (34), which is presumably that of the above John's son John 'the ungrateful..'
