Obituary:
Mr. Charles John Rowland
It was with a great deal of regret that the news was received over the district on Thursday last that Mr. C.J.Rowland, of 'Dalmoora', Bell, had that morning passed away at the Dalby Hospital, of which he had been an inmate for but a short time. Mr. Rowland, who came of an old English family, well known in naval circles, was 66 years of age, having been born in 1859, at Coulsden, in the county of Surrey, England. He came first to N.S.W., spending some time in Sydney, where he met and married Miss Watson, and subsequently returned home to the old country. Coming again to Australia he eventually settled in this district nearly twenty years ago, on the Koondai Creek, and for many years lived there with his family. He quickly established himself in the good graces of every member of the community, becoming highly popular with all whom he came in contact. He interested himself in every movement that aimed at advancing the interests of the district, taking active official part in the Race Club, the Progress Association, the Local Producers' Assoc. and other bodies that catered for the social or material advancement of the district and the comfort and well being of its residents. In this work, which he regarded in the light of a public duty he found a splendid helpmate in his wife, who was most energetic in the promotion of entertainment and functions for various worthy objects, particulary taking a leading part in the gathering of comforts and funds for the troops during the great war, and looking after and helping them on there return. The worthy couple were themselves unfortunate enough to loose a son on the battle front, the loss was most keenly felt. Mrs. Rowland passed away a few years later and the double loss doubtless to a great extent clouded the remaining years of the deceased. Mr. Rowland had been freely described in the pithy, but deep meaning phase, " an old English gentleman", courteous to all, he appealed to everyone who had the pleasure of his company, urbane, and profoundly sincere, a man of good breeding and superior education, yet, with it all, a modest, even retiring disposition...
