Manor of Wangay.
The manor of Wangay, or Wangey, (parcel of the possessions of Barking Abbey,) was on lease, when that monastery was dissolved, to John Humphreys. King Edward VI. granted it, in 1551, to Edward Lord Clinton (fn. 65) . It was sold by him the same year to Thomas Baron, or Barnes (fn. 66) , who died seised of it in 1573 (fn. 67) . Soon afterwards it reverted to the crown.

William Erwood and Richard and Robert Flower were all mayors and so were Edward Northey and John Stephens, also clothiers. (fn. 98) That some at least of these manufacturers possessed gentle status and were prosperous is in various ways attested. Northey (fn. 99) and John Pierce (d. c. 1642) (fn. 100) sent their sons to Oxford, and Richard Batt bequeathed £130 in cash. (fn. 101

* ABBOT, Sir Morris (1565-1642). Alderman of Bridge With
out from 1626 to 1631, and of Coleman street from 1631 to 1642, Abbot came of an influential family with ecclesiastical, commercial, and gentry connexions. He was the son of a City Clothworker and the son-in-law of the wealthy Alderman Bartholomew Barnes. His brother George was Archbishop of Canterbury, and another brother, Robert, was Bishop of Salisbury. His trading connexions were ubiquitous: he was free of the Turkey, Italian, French, Spanish, and Muscovy Companies. In at least four Companies, he had held some of the highest positions. An Incorporator of the East India Company, he was Deputy Governor from 1615 to 1624, and Governor from 1624 to 1637; he was an Incorporator and Director of the North-West Passage Company in 1612, Treasurer of the Levant Company from 1614 to 1616 and then, one of the Court of Assistants to 1624. He was an opponent of the Sandys group in the Virginia Company and was therefore proposed for the post of Treasurer by the crown in 1620 and 1622 in opposition to the ruling party. In 1624, he was appointed one of the royal Council set up to discuss the future of Virginia.

on vellum laid down on playing card
oval, 2 3/16 in. (55 mm.) high, translucent blue guilloché enamelled gold frame with white enamel border
Provenance
The Duke of Beaufort; Christie's, London, 13 December 1983, lot 87.
Lot Notes
The motto 'Espoier me comforte' is associated with both the Strangways and Tilney families. Philip Tilney of Shelley, Suffolk (1540/1-1601/2) had only one son, Charles Tilney (1561-1586) who was hanged, drawn and quartered for High Treason as a Member of the Babington Conspiracy. No sisters or children feature in the printed pedigree.
The motto appeared on the Standard of Sir Giles Strangways of Melbury, Dorset (1486-1546). His great-grandson, John Strangways of Melbury Dorset (d.1593), married Dorothy (d.1592), daughter of Sir John Thynne of Longleat. They had three sons, two of whom died without issue, and three daughters: Dorothy, Grace and Anne, and it has been suggested that the present miniature depicts the youngest of the three daughters, Anne. There is no record of the dates of birth of the sisters and no other daughters of Sir Giles Strangways and his wife Dorothy are noted on the Strangways pedigree recorded at the 1623 Heralds' Visitation of Dorset (College of Arms Ms: IC22/136-137). Grace's eldest son John Chamberlayne was born in 1608 or 1609 when the present sitter would have been aged twenty. The date of Grace's marriage to Edmund Chamerlayne of Maugersbury is not known, neither is her age. Had she married at the age of eighteen it is possible that Grace is the daughter depicted in the miniature, however it is more probable that Anne is the sitter. Anne married George Norton of Abbots Leigh, Somerset.
We are grateful to Thomas Woodcock and Janet Grant for their assistance in the Tilney Strangways research.

Churchill, Oxfordshire. In the South Aisle, against the South Wall, is this Inscription:
"Here lyeth Elizabeth Bourne wife of Anthony Bourne Esq.
& only daugh. & heiress of Edm. Horne Esq.
Of ye body of Amy Clarke his last wife who departed this life ye XXV of Aug in ye year of our lord 1599."
ELIZABETH HORNE (c.1549-1599)
Elizabeth Horne was the daughter of Edmund Horne of Sarsdon, Oxfordshire (c.1490-1553), a gentleman pensioner, and Amy Clarke. Elizabeth's mother took as her second husband Sir James Mervyn (1539-1611), by whom she had another daughter, Lucy (1565-before 1610), who later married George Touchet, baron Audley (later earl of Castlehaven). Brought up in her stepfather's household in Wiltshire, Elizabeth married Anthony Bourne of Holt Castle, Worcestershire in 1566. Although they had two children, Mary and Amy, Bourne was a womanizer and frequently away from home. He was also a violent man,... after he had stolen the wife of a London gentleman, Lord Burghley threatened to prosecute him. In 1575, Bourne fled to Calais with his mistress and their son. ... Amy Clarke Mervyn or Marvin is found on lists of ladies in 1558/9 and 1567/8. The situation dragged on, unresolved, until 1590, in spite of Elizabeth having the able advice of Sir Julius Caesar. In November 1584, Elizabeth wrote to her half sister, Lady Audley, in reply to a letter Lucy had written to her in August: "My good Sister, I give you a million of thanks, that you would vouchsafe to enquire after my well-doing. Amongst all my misfortunes, nothing had increased my grief so much as the unkindness of my natural friends, of whom I have allways deserved well, and find the contrary. When I was distressed, and forced and constrained by necessity to seek the aid of friends to resist the injuries my unkind husband offered me himself, and my children, to the utter overthrow of us all, I first sought my refuge amongst those which by nature were most bound to have yielded me counsel and comfort, friendship, succour and assistance. Being refused through no ill deserts in myself, but through want of good will in themselves, I was forced, my dear sister, and could not otherwise, to accept aid amongst strangers who had some reason to offer it, and I more to take it. . . . I live at Sarisden, where I mean to secrete myself and my sorrows, until God give me a better estate."
...Amy Bourne did marry Fulke Conway. Mary Bourne wed Sir Herbert Croft.
