To several of his former servants, the deputy of his ward and others, a black gown. To William Laxton of Gretton (Northamptonshire) "myddlesonne" of Thoas Laxton, Thomas, another son of the same, Alice and Agnes their sisters, to Thomas, son of Robert Laxton of Gretton and to Robert, Henry, William, Richard and Edward, brothers of the aforesaid Thomas, to Crystian Webster of Owndell (Oundle, Northamptonshire), widow, William Presgrave of London, haberdasher his servants and others he leaves divers sums of money, gold rings etc. To my Lord Mayor of London, the Swordbearer and others a black gown. The Lord Mayor and others to dine at his house on the day of his funeral. By codicil he devises to the wardens and Commonalty of the Mistery of Grocers within the City of London certain lands in the parish of St Swithin at London Stone and in Sherborne Lane, St Nicholas Lane, Abchurch Lane, Candlewyckstrete, Eastchepe and elsewhere in the city upon condition they take proceedings to obtain at the hands of the King and Queen (Philip and Mary), the tenement late called "the Guild House" in Owndell (Oundle) for the purpose of a school house, provide a master and usher for teachin grammar at a specified stipend and also appoint several poor honest men dwelling in Owndell (Oundle) to be "beademen" for him at the said house, providing them with free lodging and paying each of them eightpence weekly.
He married, as can be seen from his will, Joan, daughter of William Kirkeby of Rolleston, Leicestershire and Alice Wheetall. She was then a widow of a not very prosperous grocer named Henry Luddington who had died in 1531 leaving her with seven children and one unborn. Three of her children survived their early years, Nicholas (also apprenticed to a grocer and later transfered to William Laxton, Joan and Anne. Sir William Laxton had no children of his own.
Sir William Laxton died on 27th July "at night, between 8 and 9 at his house in Aldermary". As he was born before the compulsory registration of baptism his age is unknown, however it is supposed that he was under 60 at death.His funeral took place on 9th August 1556. He is buried at St Mary Aldermary in London. His wife outlived her husband by 21 years.
