1751 Margaret was born at Bletso Castle, Bedfordshire , on 31 May 1443. The date and month are not disputed, as she required Westminster Abbey to celebrate her birthday on 31 May. The year of her birth is more uncertain. William Dugdale , the 17th century antiquary, has suggested that she may have been born two years earlier, in 1441. This suggestion is based on evidence of inquisitions taken at the death of Margaret's father. Dugdale has been followed by a number of Margaret's biographers. However, it is more likely that she was born in 1443, as in May 1443, her father had negotiated with the King about the wardship of his unborn child in case he died on a campaign.[1]
She was the daughter of John Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset , and Margaret Beauchamp of Bletso ... According to Thomas Basin , Somerset died of illness, but the Crowland Chronicle reported that his death was suicide. Margaret, as his only child, was the heiress to his fortunes.[2]
On Margaret's first birthday, the King broke his arrangement with Margaret's father and gave her wardship to William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk , though Margaret remained with her mother... Although she was her father's only legitimate child, Margaret had two half-brothers and three half-sisters from her mother's first marriage whom she supported after her son's accession.[4]

Margaret was married to Suffolk's son, John de la Pole . The wedding was held between 28 January and 7 February 1450. Papal dispensation was granted on 18 August 1450 because the spouses were too closely related. Three years later, the marriage was dissolved and the king granted Margaret's wardship to his own half-brothers, Jasper and Edmund Tudor .[5][6][7]

Margaret never recognized this marriage. In her will, made in 1472, Margaret refers to Edmund Tudor as her first husband. Under canon law Margaret was not bound by the marriage contract anyway, as she entered the marriage before reaching the age of twelve.[8] ...Margaret was 12 when she married 24-year old Edmund Tudor on 1 November 1455.

Margaret and her son remained in Pembroke until the York triumphs of 1461.[11] ....The Countess always respected the name and memory of Edmund for he was the father of her only child. In 1472, sixteen years after his death, Margaret specified in her will that she wanted to be buried alongside Edmund, although she enjoyed a long, stable and close relationship with her third husband who died in 1471.

On 3 January 1462, Margaret married Henry Stafford (c.1425 - 1471), son of Humphrey Stafford, 1st Duke of Buckingham. The dispensation for the marriage, necessary because Margaret and Stafford were second cousins....Margaret's own estates were still the main source of income. Margaret's estates enabled the pair to enjoy an aristocratic lifestyle. They had no children.[14]
She became a widow again in 1471.

In June 1472, Margaret married Thomas Stanley, the Lord High Constable and King of Mann. ...Later in her marriage, the Countess preferred living alone. In 1499, with her husband's permission, she took a vow of chastity in the presence of Richard FitzJames Bishop of London Taking a vow of chastity while being married was unprecedented. She moved away from her husband and lived alone at Collyweston She was regularly visited by her husband, who had rooms reserved for him. Margaret renewed her vows in 1504.

On the death of Henry VII, the Countess was declared to be regent for her grandson, Henry VIII , who was considered too young to reign on his own.
Her regency was short lived, however, as the Countess died on 29 June 1509 in the Deanery of Westminster Abbey just over two months after the death of her son. She is buried in the Henry VII Lady Chapel of the Abbey, in a black marble tomb topped with a bronze gilded effigy and canopy...
Her tomb was sculpted by Pietro Torrigiano and features a portrait effigy of Margaret dressed in traditional widow’s dress, her head resting on two pillows decorated with the Tudor badge, her hands raised in prayer and the Beaufort family crest at her feet. The Latin inscription, written by Erasmus, translates as “Margaret of Richmond, mother of Henry VII, grandmother of Henry VIII, who gave a salary to three monks of this convent and founded a grammar school at Wimborne, and to a preacher throughout England, and to two interpreters of Scripture, one at Oxford, the other at Cambridge, where she likewise founded two colleges, one to Christ, and the other to St John, his disciple. Died A.D.1509, III Kalends of July [29 June]“.

    Will: MARGARET COUNTESS OF RICHMOND.

Proved 17 tb October 1512.

    Beaufort, Margaret (I01197)

1752 Margaret, the third daughter, married Edward Fiennes, of Broughton Castle, who died in the year 1528, leaving a son, Richard. Richard is mentioned in his grandmother's will; he succeeded to the family honours and estates. His sister Elizabeth, married Sir Francis Barrantyne, of Great Haseley,' Oxon.
From Dame Ann's will we learn that Margaret Fiennes took as her second husband Thomas Nevell, who, as we learn from the will, had a young son named Wilham. Thomas Nevell was of Holt, Leicester. According to Nichols''History of Leicester,' vol. ii., p. 730, he was three times married: (1)to Clara, daughter and coheir of Ralph Nevell, of the same family, by whom he had a daughter, Margaret, eventually her father's heir; (2) Katherme, daughter of Sir Geoffrey Foljambe, of Walton ; (3) daughter of . . ., of Oxfordshire, and this third wife was no doubt Margaret, widow of Edward Fiennes. Sir Thomas Nevell was Sheriff of Leicester in the year 1539.

    Description Will of Richard Hare
    Date 08 May 1629
    PROB 11/155

    1525 to 1565
.... In 1524 Bartholomew Baron, mercer, obtained a lease from the company of the tenement and seld called the Crown for a term of 50 years from 1525 at £6 rent. Baron was to be responsible for repairs and within 3 years was to pay £100 towards the cost of new tenements, shops, and warehouses there; he was only to let or grant parts of the property to freemen of the Mercers' Company. His rent was said to have been reduced from £7. 14s., which had been the annual total received from tenants between 1517 and 1519, ...In 1529 this lease was assigned to John Hare, mercer, who was probably living there in 1541 and 1544. .... 33 was sold to John Hare and John Blundell, mercers, and their heirs and assigns for £120, a sum which was presumably calculated as 20 years' purchase,.... At the time of this grant John Hare occupied the property. He continued to live there until his death in 1565, when he left his dwelling house called the Crown with its shops, cellars, yards, and warehouses to his son Richard Hare and his male heirs, with successive remainders to his younger sons Hugh, John, and Thomas and their male heirs, and then to his eldest son Ralph Hare and his heirs. 1765 Marriage license (Archbispos of Canterbury):
Thomas Steward of Barton Mills esq to Lucy Hatton of Tower Street London marriage at Wandsworth "with consent of her mother" dated 5 Oct 1674
Thomas was there stated to be "abt 28" and Lucy "abt 17".

Lucy's father Roger Hatton of Mark Lane, London, Alderman of Vintry Ward was a draper and apparently involved in shipping activity. He had an MI at All Hallows Barking, died 26 Jul 1666.

Roger Hatton was bap at St Antholin 15 Sep 1622 the son of another Roger Hatton apparently by Anne Palmer "of Leicester". When he went to school he was "aged 17" Apr 1658, so at his marriage license sixteen years later when he said he was "about 28" he was really "about 33".

My 'evydence' to be kept by the feoffees in such places as they think best for its safe keeping, until this my will is performed, and then to be delivered to Thomas Arundell.
I and Thomas have both put our seals, and Thomas his signature. Thomas Tregarthen to receive 40s yearly for life from the revenues of the manors, etc., for his good counsel to me and my husband.

The family of Nicholas is well known as firm Royalists. Sir Edward, or as he is generally called Mr. Secretary Nicholas, ... but he was not immediately related to the family at Manningford, for his arms were different (see them engraved in Simon's Seals, pi. xxxi).
Sir Oliver Nicholas, the father of the husband of Mrs. Jane, was cupbearer to King James I. and carver to King Charles the First, and left his own principles of loyalty to his son Edward. The marriage of the latter with Miss Lane was blest with only one son, who died unmarried before both his parents, at the early age of twenty-two; but he was soon followed to the grave by his mother; and they lie side by side within the altar rail. Near them is Mr. Nicholas himself; and another stone commemorating the death of some one who died in 1722, aged 63. As nothing but " Nicholas, esq." and the dates remain, it might be a brother or a second wife of Mr. Nicholas, though 20 years younger, as the former wife was 10 years older. His own monument is erected against the north wall of the chancel, with this inscription :

" Hie infra sita sunt reliquiffi viri memoria dignissimi, Edvardi Nicholas, armigeri, hujus pagi Toparcha?; qui, tarn ecclesia; quam Monarchic Anglicana, fidei inviolata;, amicitia? fabularum exemplis non secundum, patientia? nullis dolorum eruciatibus expugnabilis, et festivitatis ingenii qua delicias omnium se reddidit. Frustra renitente podagra diuturna, exemplum posteris celebre reliquit: et tandem, iixequieto morbo fractus, et vita- ct inonim liominum pertsesus, animam cgit lubens, cal. Maii decimo tertio, anno salutis 1706, artatis 77."

There is only one other monument, with this inscription on a shield :
"HE ARE I. AYES THE BODY OF ELIZ. HIND. BVRIED JU'Y 5, 1675."
The stone is situated among the graves of the Nicholas family.

1782 Married 1) by May 1374, Isabel, daughter of Alice de la Mare, of Delamers, Hertfordshire, when the Berkshire landowner, Sir Thomas de la Mare, settled his manor of Aldermaston upon various members of the Carew family for life. Isabel was quite probably related to Sir Thomas; and it was certainly through her that Carew established a connection with John Ludwick who became her stepfather about 1387, holding the manor of Delamers in the right of his wife until his death in 1411, followed soon after that year by Alice. Delamers Manor then passed to her grandson, Nicholas Carew II. Isabel was buried in Beddington Church where she appears in an effigy with her husband.

1785 Married 3 times. First to John Greene of Stotford Bedfordshire, second to John Morduant and lastly to John Carew.

..Upon Lord Stourton's attainder...all his rights in the manor were forfeited to the person on whom the overlordship had descended from William Govis, the original grantor. This was proved to be Lewes, Lord Mordaunt, and in 1567 he proceeded by action of ejectment to recover it from William Chafyn, the son of Thomas, the lessee. It was necessary for Lord Mordaunt, in order to establish his title, to prove his heirship, and this was done by records produced in court. ...Walter de Ailesbury held under him in socage under an annual rent of 12d., and that his heirs were his two daughters, Joan and Alice. [Esch. 27 Edw. I., No. 53.] Joan soon after was married to John de Latimer, and Alice became the wife of Robert de Musters, or Monasteriis, but died in 1311 without issue, leaving her sister Joan her heir, who thereby became owner of the entirety. It was proved also that the manor was held by successive generations of the Latimer family until the reign of Henry VII., when Sir Nicholas Latimer, who died in 1505, was succeeded by his only daughter and heiress, Edith, wife of Sir John Mordaunt....

Should the above read "great-grandfather" ? John Mordaunt who d 1505 was the father of John, 1st Baron Mordaunt d 1562 Turvey, Beds who was the father of John, 2nd Lord Mordaunt d Apr/Oct at Turvey who was the father of Lewis, 3rd Lord Mordaunt the subject above.

You would then be in agreement with CP (V, 193-6). Save that the 2nd baron is said to have d. 1571.

Nicholas of Roundway & Manningford. Wiltshire Notes and Queries
There is, in the British Museum, a parchment copy of a post-nuptial settlement made by Edward Nicholas of Manningford Bruce, on 6th May 1687, in anticipation of his then intended marriage with Susannah, the widow of William Salter. This settle ment appears to have come into the hands of Robert Nicholas, of Ashton Keynes, Chairman of the Board of Excise, who wrote on the back of it : " Extremely curious and worth " preserving as a family paper and the more so as the " estate went away from the Nicholas's by marriage of the "daughter Mr. Nicholas had so long forborne to acknowledge, and whose descendant married Sir William Desse, " knight, who was first a Dancing Master and then a Banker, " afterwards a Bankrupt, and is now a Pauper in London. " Mr. P. Sutton, clothier of the Devizes, purchased the "estate. "Rx. NICHOLAS, "3 January, 1785."
This information is so curious and interesting that I should be glad to know more as to this daughter and her husband. I see in Price's Directory of London Bankers that Desse was a Banker in 1774, but nothing more is added. The documents, of which the above forms part, were given to the British Museum by Admiral Collier, who, I believe, married the only daughter of Robert Nicholas.

Edward Nicholas (d. 1582) was succeeded by his son Robert (d. 1602), after whose death the manor was held for life by his widow Jane. (fn. 47) By 1630 Manningford Bruce had passed to her son Sir Oliver Nicholas, cup-bearer to James I and carver to Charles I. (fn. 48) Oliver was succeeded there by his son Edward who was in possession by 1664. (fn. 49) Edward Nicholas died in 1706 and the manor passed to his widow Susanna for life and after her death to Anne, his daughter by his first wife Mary (née Lane), and wife of John Busfield. (fn. 50) Anne Busfield died in 1722 and was succeeded by her son Nicholas. (fn. 51) Nicholas died in 1738 and was succeeded at Manningford Bruce by his brother Oliver Busfield (d. 1762). From Oliver the estate passed to his niece Anne, the daughter of his deceased brother Thomas, and wife of John Rowland Desse. (fn. 52) In 1770 William Desse, eldest son of John Rowland Desse and his wife Anne, was owner and that year sold it to Prince Sutton. (fn. 53)
