Exemplarity and Familiarity: William Woodroffe’s Edition of Mary Rich’s Diaries.

Mary Rich, Countess of Warwick kept a spiritual diary from 1666 until her death in 1678 and the manuscript is an important example of the introspection and self-examination that particular practices of reading and writing encouraged in the Protestant “godly”. Such was her devotion that she earned a place in Samuel Clarke’s Lives of Sundry Eminent Persons (London, 1683) as a model of feminine piety. Afterwards, the diaries passed into the hands of her personal chaplain Thomas Woodroffe and then to his son William, a fellow of Queen’s College, Cambridge and later vicar of Balsham in Cambridge. William took the mass of papers, broke them up into sections spanning six months, indexed each fragment, glossed her entries at lines he considered significant or noteworthy and then distributed the edited texts as exemplary reading to his parishioners. His marginal comments on Rich’s diary entries serve as a second memoir of Rich; as a form of autobiography since he records significant events in his own life and as instructions to his parishioners on how to interpret Rich’s work. He places the greatest emphasis (through the heaviest annotation) on the entries recording her troubled married life but also highlights the communal aspects of this introspective work, listing visitors and identifying well-known figures. Woodroffe’s treatment of the manuscript has influenced all scholarship on Rich since; indeed it is impossible to ignore since his amplifications and speculations are on the manuscript page, guiding any reader. As a result his editing stipulates a particular interpretations of Rich’s words, behaviour and activities and his editing work is inseparable from the text itself so that any treatment of Rich as a narrative voice is also a engagement with the preconceptions, intentions and interpretations of her first editor.

    May be of Derby.

Creator(s): Brown family of Aldbourne, Wiltshire

According to some family recollections written by Henry Brown in about 1920, the Browns of Aldbourne can be traced in the Aldbourne parish registers to the later 17th century. The first to be mentioned is a John Brown, baptised in 1669, who was apparently the son of a Roger Brown who owned some property in Aldbourne. Henry Brown's grandfather and father lived at Lower Upham, co. Wilts. His father, William Brown, bought the Manor house and some adjoining land at Aldbourne in about 1812 and in 1840 took possession of Warren Farm, Aldbourne, where he lived after his marriage on 22 June 1841. When William Brown died on 17 May 1875, Aldbourne Farm and Warren Farm were taken over by his son, also named William, who transferred it to Henry Brown in 1908. Aldbourne Farm was apparently sold in 1904; Baydon Farm, and various other small plots of land in the Aldbourne area, had been sold earlier; Henry Brown remained at Warren Farm until his retirement in 1919, when it was sold.

3891 William Salusbury, the son of Owen and Mary, is probably the William Salusbury of Rug, mentioned in Bishop Godfrey's will.

Owen's father, William Salusbury, Esq., of Rhug, was the Royalist governor of Denbigh Castle, repaired it at his own expense, garrisoned and defended it with vigor for Charles I (1625-1649) in the Second Civil War (1648), but at last capitulated to Gen. Mytton. This William Salusbury, Esq. was the third son of Sir John Salusbury, Knight., of Lleweni, whose wife was Catherine Tudyr of Berain, later the wife of Edward Thelwell, and William Salusbury was therefore a step-cousin to the Goodmans.

John Toppe(V) succeeded his father at Stockton. He had matriculated, December 11th, 1612, at Hart Hall, Oxford, as "Wilts gen. aged 16," and was admitted B.A., June 22nd, 1615, from " Hart Hall, arm fil' n. m." .. He was "of Lincoln's Inn, set. 26" in 1623.
He married Elizabeth, daughter and coheiress of Sir Thomas Hamon, of Brasted, Co. Kent, Knight... John Toppe's will, dated December 10th, 1638, was proved by Edward Toppe, his brother and executor, March 13th, 1639-40.

    Will of John Toppe:
He desires to be buried in the churchyard of Stockton, and not in the Church: he gives £20 for communion plate: £1000 for some charitable use in Co. Wilts, or at Oxford University, at the discretion of his dear friends. ... his uncle, William Lavington, Esq., counsellor-at-law, and Alexander Toppe, his uncle ... Testator's poor kindred were to be first regarded, then men of Wiltshire, particularly of Stockton and Codford St. Mary. .. certain lands were to go with the entailed property to his brother, John, and the residue to his brother, Edward.
Richard Smith records his death in his "obituary'(Camden Soc), March 13th, 1639-40. " Mr Topp, who married Mts Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Hamond, died. He gave a legacie to my brother Walter."
The inquisition on his death was taken 18th August, 16 Charles, at Salisbury, whereby it was found that he had died March 13th last past before the date of the inquisition, that Elizabeth, his wife, survived him, and that John Toppe was his brother and next heir, aged, at the time of the death of the deceased, thirty eight years and more. ...[Chancery, I.P.M., Miscellaneous, Elizabeth to Charles II,, 29th Part. John Stokes was born ABT. 1513 in Of, Seend, Wiltshire, England. He was the son of 2. John Stokys and 3. Margery Nicholas. He married Abt.1537.

Popular Piety in Late Medieval England By Andrew Brown
"... Seend chapel had almost been entirely rebult at the end of the fifteenth century. The brass of John Stokes, clothier, chantry and obit founder, who died in 1498 lies in the north aisle. Indeed he requested in his will that he be buried in my "newly built and constructed chapel." A traditon has it that the Stokes were the main contributors to the church rebuilding; a great many painted glasses with pictures of some of the Stoykes children were to be seen in John Subrey's day."

Christopher Stokes I, lord of the manor of Stanhawes Court, Gloucestershire,
England, son of John Stokys (Stokes), lord of Stokes Haule of Seend, the son
of John Stokes (who built the chapel at Seend, died 1498), married Marjery
Nicholas, daughter of John Nicholas, of Rundwaie, Wiltshire, near Calne,
England. He died about 1566, married to Anne Leicester, of Christian
    Malford, Wiltshire.
The above ancient Stokes information is discussed in detail in "The Book of Stokes".

See Arthur Schomberg's "The Pedigree of John Stokes of Seend, Co. Wilts." in 1886 and additional material in Wiltshire Notes and Queries vols. V and VI.

The pedigree which Schomberg published was a transcription from an old parchment document which set out the generations .... It was written on five skins glued together and contained 64 Coats of Arms. The author is unknown but I it may have been ordered by Richard Stokes (1661-1724), an attorney of Calne Wiltshire. It would seem that the fortunes of the Gloucestershire Stokes reached their peak in his generation. Richard died shortly before the latest date on the pedigree but it may have been completed by his son, Richard.
Genealogists have questioned the authenticity of the pedigree. The original parchment is in the possession (1986) of Robert Van Slyke of Auckland.

...we have John Stokys de Sende (d.1498) who married Alice (d.1500) and some of his details have come down to us. He was a clothier in comfortable circumstances. Much of the weaving trade seems to have been centred in Wiltshire. John paid for the building of the north aisle of Seend church, and perhaps the whole church. He and his wife were buried there and small brasses of them were inlaid in the stone flagging of the north aisle. They are about 40cm. high and under them is the inscription

"Here lyeth Iohn Stoyks and Alys his wiff whiche Iohne decessed the XVIII day of June in the year of our Lord God thousand CCCCLVII on whose soulys Jhu have mercy. Amen."

The surrounds of the window above the brasses have shears and a pair of scissors carved in the stone to indicate the trade of clothier along with other decorations. The windows were adorned with pictures of John, his wife and children but it is reported that about the year 1648, all the painted glass was defaced and broken by William Somner of Send
John (d. 1498) had two sons called John. John (d. 1502) married Marjery Nicholas of Rundwale and the pedigree shows the Coat of Arms formed by this marriage.

By 1498 'Mayne's lands' belonged to John Stokes of Seend, who then left them to his son, John, the younger. (fn. 68)
