    She survived her husband eleven years, and died in 1466. After her husband 's death, she took the veil. The commission to receive her was addressed by the Archbishop of York to his suffragan, John Bishop of Philippolis, on the 18th of December, 1455. The register in which this document is recorded contains, also, a copy of the oath which was to be administered to the illustrious "vowess". "In the name of God, Amen I, Elizabeth Scrop, late wife to my worshipful Lord, John newly Lord Scrop and of Masham, avow to be chaste from this tyme forward, and I bihote to lefe stably in yis avow duryng my life. And in wittenes hereof, I with myne owne hand make this subscription .. . "


    Sir Thomas Chaworth of Wiverton, Co. Notts, was twice married. By his first wife, Nichola, daughter of Sir Reginald Braybrook, he had an only child, Elizabeth, who married John Lord Scrope of Upsal. His second wife was Isabel daughter of Sir Thomas, and co-heir to her nephew Hugh Aylesbury.

    By his second wife Sir Thomas Chaworth had several children, mentioned in his will. Sir Thomas was the son and heir of Sir William Chaworth, who died in 1398, and whose will occurs in the Test. Ebor. I No.CLXXX.
    Alice his mother in her will desires to be buried in the Abbey of Beauchief (in Derbyshire, where her husband was buried). To Thomas her son she leaves an ouche of gold set with pearls and diamonds, a bed of blue and its costers with her arms, and a book called Placebo and Dirige. To Nichola, the wife of her son Thomas, she bequeaths a ring of gold with two diamonds .

    The lady Susanna Roe was buryed the 31 daye of January 1609-10." Daughter of Giles Duncombe, and wife of Sir Henry Rowe the elder. ....funeral of Sir Thomas Rowe, who settled at Shacklewell, and was buried in Hackney church, has been given before: his son, Sir Henry, husband of Susanna before-mentioned, died in 1612, and was buried at Hackney on the 22d of December. ...to his sons, Henry and Thomas, and to his two daughters, he left 2000I. each; to his son Henry he bequeathed also, his capital messuage at Shacklewell, and all his customary lands in the parish of Hackney .. Several children of Sir Henry Rowe the younger, by his wives Ann and Sarah were baptized at Hackney. Sir Henry Rowe was buried Nov. «, 1660; Sarah, his second wife, March 26, 1657...     William Halliday married circa 1600, Susan (or Susannah), the daughter of Henry Rowe, a prominent member of the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers and later Lord Mayor (whose father, Sir Thomas, had been an earlier Lord Mayor). William and Susan had two daughters: Anne (born in 1602) and Margaret (born circa 1603). In 1617 he served as Master of the Mercers Company and was elected a sheriff for the year.In February 1618, he was elected an alderman of the City.

    ...The nominations of Sir W. Herrick, J. Jolles, John Robinson (Mercer) and B. Norton, and of Sir B. Hickes, Sir W. Bond, Sir W. Stone and Sir W. Herrick had been rejected by the Court on April 21 and April 30 respectively (Rep. 27, ff. 2 b, 7 b). The former of these nominations was held to be void, because Robinson, being Searcher at the Customs, was exempted by Act of Parliament from service as an Alderman.

    The only other substantial estate in Stoke was the parsonage. ... Spryngham and his wife Mary sold the reversion to William Burde in 1565, and he, his wife, and son, transferred it to the Crown in 1579.(fn.129) Thomas Strode received a lease from the Crown in 1582 (fn.130) and in 1591 John Robinson and Lawrence Singleton were given the reversion of Strode's estate. (fn. 131) Strode died in 1595, leaving his tenancy to his widow during her widowhood and then to his eldest son John (d.1621). (fn.132) A Thomas Strode was living in the house about 1633, (fn. 133) and the family still lived in Stoke, probably on the parsonage estate, in 1652. (fn.134)
    By the time of his death in 1610 John Robinson, a London mercer, held both the advowson and the rectorial estate, but only the reversionary interest in the capital house of the parsonage. To his second son John, of Gravesend (Kent), he left the rectory, and to his elder son Robert, a London merchant, the reversion of the house, then held by his wife for life. This interest John bought from his brother in 1612 for £800. (fn. 135) The property passed to John's grandson Sir John, of Denston (Suff.), as part of his marriage settlement in 1677. (fn. 136) Sir John died in 1704, and his trustees sold the site of the college and the rectorial estate in 1712 to Thomas Rodbard, a London fishmonger. (fn. 137)

Fletcher occupied this c. 1650, and in 1656, when William Robinson, gentleman, of Stanmore, Middlesex, conveyed his lands by fine to Edward Fenn of Staples Inn, to hold to the use of himself, his heirs and assigns, 33- 34 was described as a messuage or tenement called the Queen's Head in St. Mary Colechurch parish, now or late occupied by Fletcher. Robinson was named as the owner of 34 in a Crown rental of 1664 relating to former chantry properties.     In Kingston Church, built in the 13th century, is a small brass inscribed: 'Mr. Richard Meweys whych deceassyd the iii day of March in the yere of our Lord God MCCCCC and XXXV.' He is represented as wearing a long gown liberally trimmed with fur. A small plate on one side of the figure is engraved with four sons similarly clad, and on the other side is a shield of the Mewes arms--Paly of 6 on a chief 3 crosses pattee."

    An Inquisition Post Mortem on William ‘Mewes’ for October 1587 lists his lands which include ‘the Great Pasture called Newtown Marsh in Newtown’ (PRO C142/238/31). A further Inquisition on Sir John Meux dated April 1630 elaborates on this family’s land in Newtown. It includes 300 acres of pasture in Newtown Marsh. He also had a message with four acres of land in the town in the tenure of Thomas Bull (hereafter known as Bulls), which was held of Thomas Barrington of the manor of Swainston, and another called Butts (PRO C142/450/69)

    If the above statement is correct, Arthur Norton must have married again Rebecca. .... He only mentions two sons, George and Hugh.

    ...Bonham Norton, who was also a freeman of the Stationers’ Company, and served various offices in the company, being master in 1613, 1626, and 1629. He held a patent for printing common-law books with Thomas Wright, and became the king’s printer. He published a great number of books, was an alderman of London, and subsequently retired to live on his property at Church Stretton in Shropshire. He served as sheriff of Shropshire in 1611 (in which year he received a grant of arms), and married Jane, daughter of Thomas Owen of Condover, Shropshire, one of the judges of the court of common pleas. He died on 5 April 163-5 and was buried in St. Faith’s, near his father. His widow erected a monument to their memory there, and another to her husband in Condover Church. He left a son, Roger Norton (d. 1661), also a printer and freeman of the Stationers’ Company.”

    The Eltons were a prominent Bristol family, and Abraham 1st was Sheriff of Bristol in 1702, a member of the Society of Merchant Venturers, becoming Master in 1708, Mayor of Bristol in 1710, and High Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1716. He became a Member of Parliament for the five years preceding his death in 1727. He was created a Baronet in 1717. The family wealth originally came from copper and brass (including mining in the Mendip Hills and other commerce, and property. His descendants, not only at Clevedon, also profited from the slave trade [10] Sir Abraham Elton was succeeded by four further Sir Abraham Eltons.

    ...This George purchased the Manor of Lake ... in 1608, he had a lease of the rectory and manor of Bulford for 40 years from the crown; in December 1609 he bought the manor of Salterton for £1,300 ...He married Mary, daughter of Philip Poor of Durrington, by whom he had issue three sons and six daughters.
    i. John Duke of Lake, of whom presently.
    ii. George Duke of Bulford, who is stated in the allegation for a marriage licence to have been 26 years old in 1622; he married Catherine Gilbert (she was buried at Bulford, 9 September 1623), by whom he had issue on son, viz., George Duke, bapt. At Milston, 29 June 1623; admitted to the Middle Temple, 1 Feb 1650; a deponent in the Chancery suit Aycliff v Duke (Collins 328 Depositions).
    iii. Andrew Duke, who was possessed of a moiety of the manor and rectory of Bulford which by his will, dated 24th May 1633, he devised to his eldest bother John Duke of Lake; he bequested 1000 marks to his nephew George, the son of his brother George, on the condition that he released all his moiety of the manor and rectory of Bulford to the said John Duke of Lake, to the intent that John should have the enjoyment of the whole manor and rectory; he left £10 to Thomas Duke of Trowbridge. He died at Lake, unmarried, 24 June 1633, and was buried in Wilsford Church 27 June; his will was proved 11 July 1633 (P.C.C.)


    The inquisition on the death of George Duke of Lake is No. 650 in the Chancery Inquisitions taken at Marlborough, 1 August, 16 K. James 1, 1618, wherein it is stated that he died 18 May 1618, seized of the manor of Lake, of the manor and capital messuage of Bulford, of the Rectory of Bulford with the tithe of Bulford and Durrington, and also of the manor of Compton. John Duke is his eldest son and heir, and is 33 years of age or more. His widow, Mary Duke, made her will 11 March 1640, proved 6th July 1642.


    John Duke, eldest son and heir, of Lake, was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn, 23 October 1605; he married at Dunsford, 25 Feb 1609, Mary dau. Of Edward Young of Little Durnford (she was bapt. 1 April 1588) by whom he had issue-

    ii. John Duke of Stratford sub Castro, of whom presently.

    Cecily Gresham was the daughter of Sir John Gresham (1492-October 23, 1556) and his first wife, Mary Ipswell (d. before 1553), and a cousin Sir Thomas Gresham of Royal Exchange fame. She married a Spanish merchant living in London, variously called Jermyn Cyoll, Germain Cioll, Germayne Sciol, and Jarman Sewel or Sewell (d.1587+), but she had a successful career of her own as a moneylender. After 1558, Cyoll and his wife lived in Crosby Place, the London mansion formerly occupied by Sir Thomas More. Cecily was known for her charitable works in the parish, including giving bread to the poor every Sunday.

    Nicholas Martyn married Margaret, the daughter of John Wadham of Merifield, Somerset, whose brother Nicholas Wadham of Ilminster, Somerset (q.v.), founded Wadham College, Oxford. Unfortunately, Nicholas was the last of the Martyns, for his three sons died...
