    Connection??
I think that you are related to my Chipperfields, who hailed from Clavering in Essex and most of whom emigrated to Australia (NSW included) in the 1850s. Henry is a family name.My grandmother was Ruth Elizabeth Chipperfield born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in 1891. Her father was David Chipperfield who was born in Clavering in 1851. David had a number of brothers, Nathan, Shadrack, and Elijah. Their father was Joseph Chipperfield born c.1769 also born in Clavering.

I have been in touch with other Chipperfields in Australia and was told of the link to the cricketer - was it Arthur Gordon Chipperfield? If so he was my third cousin two times removed (apparently!). Do you have the approximate year of birth for you ggrandfather Henry, please?

My grandmother, Ruth Elizabeth Chipperfield said that we were related to the circus Chipperfields and there is evidence of some fairground people in Clavering in the 1850s\1860s on some census information I have.

Will of Symon Cruxson or Cruxston, Mercer of London 27 May 1584 PROB 11/67
In the name of God Amen the twenty-eight day of March anno domini one thousand five hundred eighty four and in the sixth and twentieth year of the reign of our sovereign Lady Elizabeth by the Grace of God Queen of England France and Ireland defender of the faith I Symon Cruxston citizen and mercer being of whole mynd and memory but not in perfect health of body thanks be given to almighty god I do make and ordain this my present testament and last will in manner and form following that is too say first and principally I commend my soul into the hands of almighty god my maker and creator......

Symon Croxton was granted a lease of the house in Cheap in which Agnes (probably an error for Anne) Phillipps, widow, lived, in 1567-8, to begin after her death, for 21 years. The fine was £20 at the ensealing, £40 a year after entry, and £40 two years after, with £10 also as pawn for a standing cup of that value which Sir Thomas Chamberleyne, kt., had promised to give. Croxton paid the £5 rent from 1570 to 1583. Simon Cruxson, citizen and mercer, of the parish of St. Mary le Bow, probably the same man, died in 1584 leaving his goods and leases to his wife Katharine. She paid the rent from 1584 to 1586, when she died, leaving the lease of her dwelling house and of the '2 rooms backwards' which belong to the parson of the church to her daughter Martha, wife of John Robynson. John Robynson, mercer, paid £200 fine for a lease of the property in 1586-7, and paid the £5 rent from 1586 to 1597. (fn. 11) Abraham Stephen (? recte) Speckarte paid the rent as Robinson's assign from 1597 to 1599, and Abraham Speckarte paid the same from 1599 to 1638. In 1610 Speckart, tenant of the Black Raven in Cheapside, sued for a new lease. He was offered a lease for 25 years from the expiry of the old lease, at a fine of £400, abated to £370 because he was the queen's servant, to be paid £150 in hand and the rest at year to year. On further negotiation the term was extended to 31 years, and the fine abated to £350 because paid in full in hand. Speckart is recorded as paying £330 in full for his lease in 1610-11. (fn. 12)

    William Locke.
    County: London
    Country: England
Before the death of the said William Locke, one Thomas Locke, his father, deceased, was seised of 2 messuages in the parish of the Blessed Mary of the Arches (de Arcubz), in a certain lane there commonly called Bowe Lane, late in the tenure of Thomas Parise and now of Simon Croxton; ....The said 2 messuages now in the tenure of Simon Croxton are held of the Queen in chief by knight's service, and are worth per ann., clear, £4. ...

In 1531-2 Thomas Paris held two tenements from the Minoresses for a total of £5 rent. They may have occupied the middle part of 24 on the Bow Lane frontage (perhaps 24C-D). In 1539-40 Paris was said to hold the property, now a tenement with shops, cellars, and solars, under a lease for a term of 31 years granted to Thomas Alborough. William Lock acquired the freehold from the Crown in 1540. Paris was dwelling in the house in 1550 when William Lock bequeathed the property to his son John Lock, probably for the term of his life. William died in 1550. The property then passed to William's son Thomas Lock, who in 1554, the year of his death, granted it to feoffees to hold to his use and that of his wife Mary and then to the use of his son William Lock, who died in 1558. In 1561, when Mary was still alive and Matthew Lock had the reversionary interest as the heir of Thomas Lock, the property was worth £4 a year clear and was held by Simon Croxton. This tenant was presumably the Simon Cruxson, citizen and mercer of this parish, who died in 1584 leaving his interest in his leases to his widow Katharine, who herself died in 1586. (fn. 28)

Writ to the sheriff of Surrey to compel Richard Carew to return the manors of Beddington, Bandon and Norbury claimed by John Iwardby and Sarcha his wife, Walter Twynyho and Eliz. his wife, Chris. Tropenell and Anne his wife. 25/3/2 8 May 8 Henry VII [1493]

These documents are held at Sutton Local Studies Centre
Former reference: [A18] Administrative history: On the death of Nicholas Carew in 1466 the major part of the family property passed to James Carew (Nicholas' uncle). The manor of Nutfield however was divided amongst Nicholas' sisters Sancha, Elizabeth and Anne (see Victoria History of the County of Surrey, vol. iii, p.224). They presumably also laid claim to Beddington, Bandon and Norbury as coheirs of their brother.

"James Carewe, esq. Writ 2 Jan., inquisition the last day of January, 8 Hen. VII. [1493]. Lands to the use of Nicholas Carue, of Bedyngton co. Surrey, esq., deceased, and his heirs, and to the use of his last will,... to one Nicholas Carue his son and heir in tail male. The said Nicholas the son had issue Nicholas and James, and died, when the premises descended to the said Nicholas as his son and heir. One the death of the said Nicholas, brother of James, the premises descended to Nicholas his son heir, who died without male issue, whereupon the premises descended to the said James Carue named in the writ, as his uncle and heir male.
The said James Carue died 22 Dec. last. [1492] Richard Carue, aged 23 and more, is his son and heir."

Nicholas Carew (Nicholas de Carreu), head of the Surrey branch of the family, took a lease of the manor of Beddington in 1352. The reversion was conveyed to him in 1363. The manor of Norbury was in his possession by 1375, and the manor of Nutfield was conveyed to him, possibly in the first place as a mortgage, in 1380. The manors of Bandon and Ravensbury were added by purchase to the family's possessions during the next century, and the manor of Wartling in Sussex passed into the family through the marriage of James Carew to Eleanor, daughter and co-heir of Thomas Lord Hoo. (Nutfield had not passed to James Carew on the death of his nephew in 1467, but had been divided among his nieces.)
