....In the mid-19th century the Georgian House was demolished and a new castle in the Scots Baronial style was built. The estate then called Achnacroish was purchased in 1865 by Arbuthnot Charles Guthrie, younger son of David Charles Guthrie of Craigie and co-founder of Chalmers Guthrie, the London Merchant Bank. He and his wife, Anne, spent some months here every year for the next 32 years and, during that time, changed the name to Duart House. On the death of her husband in 1897, Anne moved to London, taking the furniture and contents of the castle interior with her. Thus, Walter Murray Guthrie, her nephew and partner of Chalmers Guthrie, inherited an empty castle. He immediately put it up for sale but withdrew it after a visit to the island with his wife, Olive. They realised the potential of the site and commissioned Robert Lorimer to lay out the gardens to form a link between the Victorian castle and the Georgian walled garden. Over the next ten years, there were many important visitors to the castle including Sir Winston Churchill, who stayed here often and indeed shot his first

    Will of Godfrey Goodman 1587
In the name of God Amen in the year of our lord god one thousand five hundred and eighty six the sixteenth day of January I Godfrey Goodman being sick in body but of sound mind and perfect memory do make my last will and testament as following. .... Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Catherine a hundred pound which I am to receive of my brother Robinson .... to my other three daughters, Susan, Jane and Martha for the term of fifteen years and afterward my lease of ?.of Dadrington ?ster there unto my son Gabriel and the lease of my house in Westminster to my son Godfrey. Item I give and bequeath to my brother Gawey .... .Item I give and bequeath to my brother Robinson and my sister Robinson forty shillings in gold ... Item I give and bequeath to my nephew Edward Goodman my best bowl. Item I give and bequeath to Mr Edward Thelwell ... Item I give and bequeath to my nephew Godfrey Goodman .... my son Gabriel. ... I give and bequeath unto my dear wife Jane Goodman whom I make and ordain sole executrix of this my last will and testament...

Godfrey Goodman's date of birth is unknown, but is estimated at about 1530. Godfrey Goodman married on 28 February, 1575/6, at the church of St. Mary lé Bow in London, Jane Croxton, the third daughter of Simon and Katherine Croxton of London. She was about 18 at the time, so was probably born about 1557/8.
Their issue were: Gabriel, Godfrey, Charles, Mary, Martha, Catherine, Susan and Jane. Godfrey died in 1587.

The will of Godfrey Goodman, Senior was proved 5 March, 1587. (14 Spencer, Prerogative Court of Canterbury). Jane Croxton's sisters were Katherine and Ann. After Godfrey's death, Jane Croxton Goodman became the fourth wife of Edward Thelwell, who is also mentioned in Godfrey's will, and was probably a cousin by marriage, son of one of his mother's Thelwell relatives.
