    ?
A William Dorchester married an Elizabeth Merewether 24.04.1711 At Urchfront. A William born Etchilhampton in 1683?
An estate of perhaps 100 a. in Etchilhampton probably belonged to members of the Dorchester family in the late 17th century. (fn. 77) It apparently passed from Roger Dorchester to his daughter Anne, the second wife of William Hunt. (fn. 78) Anne was succeeded c. 1787 by Walter Hunt-Grubbe, her late husband's grandson. Walter was succeeded in 1807 by his nephew William Hunt-Grubbe (d. 1817) who sold some of his land in Etchilhampton to Richard Erle-Drax-Grosvenor. (fn. 79) William was succeeded by Lady Sarah Hunt-Grubbe c. 1819. The rest of the estate was broken up and sold by 1839. (fn. 80)

William Dorchester, by his will proved 1721, bequeathed £10 to benefit the poor of Etchilhampton not receiving parish aid. Another £10 was subsequently added and the annual interest on the £20 yielded 10s...

Letter from Thomas Bright the elder, Tenterden, [Kent] to David Laurence, Winchelsea, assistant overseer
I received your letter and have wrote to my son to inform him the contents, though I am afraid he will not be able to meet it as I understand he has been out of employ for some time. He is allowed to pay 2s 6dper week. Young men our way if they are trade or farmer's sons do notpay more than 2s but I expect you will hear from him soon. I should like it settled by paying a certain sum down at once. I think if it is not settled that way he is likely to leave this country as he has no work

A NOTE ON THE BRASS TO PHILIP CAREW, 1414, AT BEDDINGTON.
BY THE LATE J. C. CHALLENOR SMITH, F.S.A.
    COMMUNICATED BY MILL STEPHENSON, F.S.A.
IN regard to the curious brass of Philip Carew, 1414, at Beddington, some information has now come to light enabling us to identify with certainty the surname of Philip's mother, Mercy. Mr. Stephenson, guided by the heraldry of the brass, suggested that she was of the Delamare family, but her will gives satisfactory evidence that she was of a family of Hayme, as indeed appears also in the pedigree inserted in Lysons' Environs, I, 53. Mercy Carew married again after the death of Nicholas her husband and makes her will-...as Mercy Ormesby. The will was made on Monday, October 25, 1451, by licence first sought and obtained of her husband, Arthur Ormesby, esquire. She is to be buried in the church of the Friars Preachers near Ludgate, London, " juxta sepulturam Stephani Hayme patris mei ibidem. . . . Volo quod funeralia mea hujusmodi fiant honeste cum quinque cereis quolibet careo ponderante septem libras cere et cum sex torchijs quolibet torchio ponderante tresdecim libras cere." ... to Joan Tregos and her daughter Mercy certain jewels of silver and gold ... to the said Mercy Tregos a primer late belonging to the said Stephen my father ... William Fyssher farmer of my manor of Purley (Berks) . . . my manor of Pery in the parish of Harmondesworth, Middx. to be sold . . . my lands in the parish of Holy Trinity, Algate, London."
The will was proved May 12, 1453, and is registered at fo. 298, b. Kempe (Lambeth). Vol. XXV

The puzzle of the two Carew impalements remains unsolved. Apparently one of them must represent Carew and Hayme, but I cannot ascertain what the Hayme arms were. The combined Christian and surname Stephen Hayme occurs repeatedly in early Cornish records and I find very little trace of the name Hayme outside Cornwall. A legatee with the distinctly Cornish name (Mercy) Tregoos is mentioned in the will.

Nicholas Carew's will, ...was technically the testament. It was made on Tuesday, August 26, 1432; whilst the will, dealing with the real estate, was executed on September 3 following -the day preceding that of the testator's death. In the transcript of the testament there is a provision for the soul of "Stephen Hayne" but unfortunately the father of the former wife is not named.

As appears from his will, Arthur Ormsby, the second husband of Mercy Carew, was possessed of substantial property in Southwark and there is an allusion to him, as of that borough, in the patent rolls 1434.

2541 Poll of the freeholders of Wilts. 1772: - Seend, John Axford of Eastcott.

John's father, Henry, was a lawyer, coroner and later Mayor of Devizes. He owned a great deal of property in/near Seend. He was involved in some election fixing - described in detail in an article in the Wiltshire FHS journal. John was apprenticed to John Merewether, grocer of Bristol at £100 in 1740/41.

The will (John, Senior, Gentleman, of Market Lavington) refers to sons William and John, daughters Elizabeth and Grace, and cousins Froud and Ann Axford of Erlestoke, grandchildren John, Henry, Jane (children of Henry).

There is a second will of John Axford of Eastcott, Parish of Urchfont, Gentleman, 1807 (34), which is presumably that of the above John's son John 'the ungrateful..'

Compters - sometimes called counters - were small prisons for minor transgressors such as debtors, religious dissidents, drunks, prostitutes, homosexuals and asylum-seeking slaves. But their inmates were overwhelmingly debtors. They existed from medieval times and were all closed by the mid-19C, their inmates being dispersed to other institutions.

Lived at Upper Upham, Aldbourne, Overtown and Chiseldon. The Browns of Chiseldon and of Horton(Bishops Cannings) are descended from them.
Probably the 'kinsmen' mentioned in the will of Stephen Neate 1717-1755.

[from Administrative History] According to some family recollections written by Henry Brown in about 1920, the Browns of Aldbourne can be traced in the Aldbourne parish registers to the later 17th century. The first to be mentioned is a John Brown, baptised in 1669, who was apparently the son of a Roger Brown who owned some property in Aldbourne. Henry Brown's grandfather and father lived at Lower Upham, co. Wilts. His father, William Brown, bought the Manor house and some adjoining land at Aldbourne in about 1812 and in 1840 took possession of Warren Farm, Aldbourne, where he lived after his marriage on 22 June 1841. When William Brown died on 17 May 1875, Aldbourne Farm and Warren Farm were taken over by his son, also named William, who transferred it to Henry Brown in 1908. Aldbourne Farm was apparently sold in 1904; Baydon Farm, and various other small plots of land in the Aldbourne area, had been sold earlier; Henry Brown remained at Warren Farm until his retirement in 1919, when it was sold.

\_ [from Scope and Content] Will (copy) of Lawrence Brown of Newbury, proved 1785, leaving money for the purchase of coats and gowns for poor men and women of Aldbourne. Also, a deed of 1662 conveying land in Aldbourne to Roger Brown and a will (copy) of John Brown, proved 1743; and two deeds and a will, 1822-9, concerning John Shepherd who was a nephew of Lawrence Brown and had inherited lands in Aldbourne under his will. These last four documents do not seem to have any connection with the charity, but the first one may have, and the last three certainly have, a connection with the property and family of Lawrence Brown.
